Benefits of curtailment

  • Quickly deployable
Curtailment is relatively quick and inexpensive to implement, unlike other more time-consuming and expensive solutions, such as electricity grid reinforcement. We are always on the hunt for alternative solutions.

  • Stable grid
Curtailment temporarily reduces the supply of energy to the grid, thereby helping to maintain a reliable and stable electricity grid. A stable grid is less likely to become overloaded, and congestion can be avoided.

  • Contributing to the energy transition
To continue the energy transition, it’s important that the construction of wind farms and solar parks is profitable. Curtailment makes use of the electricity grid more efficient and constructing new renewable farms remains attractive.

  • Influencing negative electricity prices
A surplus on the energy grid can lead to negative prices. Curtailment prevents producers of renewable energy having to pay to generate, and prevents oversupply from increasing further.

Curtailment in practice

Renewable sources of energy, such as wind farms and solar parks, have flexibility which can be utilised to contribute to electricity grid stability. As an example, Scholt Energy has provided insight into and clarity on the available and deployable capacity of Giessenwind wind farm. With this, the generation of wind energy can be temporarily reduced or even disabled in the event of a surplus of electricity.
